The only reason I saw this film was because George Clooney and Brad Pitt star in it. I imagine most people are seeing the film for that reason, and if that’s the case then I wouldn’t even bother reading the rest of the review. Just go and watch the film because it was great to watch these two act together.
I surprisingly hadn’t seen any promotional material for the film which is shocking considering it stars some of the biggest actors on the planet and is directed by the guy who did the recent Spiderman films. While it only had a one week stint in theaters before being dumped onto Apple TV, I’m still shocked by how I had only heard about this film yesterday.
And since I hadn’t seen any promotional material, I went into this just knowing that both George Clooney and Brad Pitt play clean up guys for high profile crime. The film begins on a pretty intense note and I figured this was gonna be a tight crime thriller. We are introduced to George Clooney as “the guy” who is called in to clean up a dead body. He looks very professional, and seems like the kinda person who has seen everything and knows how to handle anything. No questions asked. Then Brad Pitt walks into the frame and turns everything we’ve seen on its head. He’s also “the guy” and was also called in to clean up the dead body, but was called in by a different client.
Both Clooney and Pitt get on each other’s nerves as they both thought they were unique and had a special set of skills that no-one else had. They end up saying and doing the same thing as each other, they even have similar people that they go to for help. They each take turns sitting and judging one another, saying how they could have done it much better and faster.
What happens in the story doesn’t matter so much as seeing George Clooney and Brad Pitt going back and forth with each other. Austin Abrams plays “the Kid” and has an awesome monologue scene, but really this is the George Clooney and Brad Pitt show. My only gripe with the film is that I wished it leaned into this more. The early premise of the film is great, but it starts to loose steam later on and the interesting concept begins to wear off. I wish it had more things that Pitt and Clooney could do together. It’s a fun film, but it’s also a film that ends up feeling as though there could have been more to this.
But as it stands, this is still a pretty fun movie. There are some laugh out loud scenes, a wonderful scene with a rat, and of course Clooney and Pitt acting side by side. This is great for a light weekend watch and I wouldn’t mind seeing it again.
